To Be or Not To Be?

This is the place where I can fully express my feeling. Without the fear of to be known by anyone. ;p JPP-Jabatan Perwakilan Pelajar (Department of Student Representative), an organisation that formed by a group of students, to represent the students in the particular institution/university to voice out their opinions. But this objective doesn't really practicing nowadays. They are more like the "school prefects" in my college.

Few months ago, I was suggested to be involved in the JPP. But I don't really think about it that time. It is a chance for me to have a new experience. Yet I pretty know that it is a tiring responsibility too. I don't think I'm ready for it. So I didn't reply my boss last time.

Few days ago, this event was served on the table again. Thanks to few friends of mine for their support, I signed up my name. And I was given only a short period to consider about it. Immediately after the form is handed in, I started to regret.

What am I doing??!!

Why am I putting myself into trouble again??!!

Isn't it the lessons for me were enough???

I listed the advantages and disadvantages of being a committee of JPP. And I found out it is 40:60. I don't have time for that. I have my final exam at the end of this year. I am emotional and sensitive enough. I don't like to hear complains. I don't like to hear the sounds of rebellion. And if there's only half who support me, useless for me to carry on.

Thanks for the supports from my parents, few of my friends and few lecturers.

Conclusion: Not to be. I quit. ;)

The Mockingbird, to kill or not to kill?

I've to write on it, I think. So I write. Because I love it!

It took me one week "to kill the mockingbird". Honestly, I usually finish  a novel in about 2-3 days. This may have already broken my personal record. The length of the novel isn't long compares to my previous reading. This is because the author used flashback and foreshadowing at the beginning of the novel, caused me hardly to understand the story well. But when comes to chapter 9, where Atticus started to help the Black in a court case, everything started to become interesting, so i took 2 days to finish the remain chapters.

This novel, by Madam Harper Lee, was written in 1960, exactly 50 years ago. I've read some articles about the novel. In U.S. and England, this novel is well known and the sales of the book never reduce even after 50 years. After gone through the novel, as it is the only novel from Lee, I realised that she must had put lots of affords in writing it. This made "To Kill A Mockingbird" is listed in the school syllabus of almost all countries that use English as their major language.
The author, Madam Harper Lee

The novel is using First Person Point of View to tell the story. The main character, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, or more frequently called as Scout in the novel, narrates the story through a mind of small kid (about 6 years old). Atticus Finch, daddy of Scout, was a lawyer of Maycomb. Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch (known as Jem), who was 4 years older than Scout, was a protective brother of Scout.

Jem and Scout in the film

These three characters have their own specific characteristics. As for me, Scout more looks like a tomboy. Her games usually were games of Jem too. And you know Jem, he would hate the "girly" stuff. For example, he always told Scout not to join him and Dill if she started to sound like girl. What she can do was just "be a boy". Jem, although became further from Scout at the end of the story, but he was still a protective brother for Scout. This explained why he sacrificed his arm during the attack of Bob Ewell to save his sister.

Atticus and Tom Robinson, who was one of the mockingbird

I bet everyone who have read this novel will be impressed by Atticus, a fair and square lawyer, so do I. He born in the anti-black age. During this era, the society's tradition was "no matter what the white had done, they always right; no matter what the black done, they always wrong". This tradition had automatically become one of the ethics or laws during that time. Racism, was the principle of Maycomb residents. They even had a special jail for the blacks, and separate them from the white prisoners. And the blacks lived as a lowest level citizen in the town. Yet, Atticus still be able to defend for Tom Robinson, who was charged for a rape case. Although Atticus was asked to do so by his boss, but he put all effort to save Tom, since he knew Tom was innocent.

How about you? What's your opinion after reading the novel? ^_^

Teaching in Another World: SK Salong (Part II)

Where were we? Erm memory shortage. Getting older...

Yeah! I was in the middle of forest, and using HILUX traveled to the school. About 45 minutes travelling on the rock road. Across the mountains, across the rivers, it was like I'm going for an adventure! My friend even hit her head on the window several times. haha
If you have to go for teaching like this everyday, how'd u think?

Finally, I've reached the destination.
But, there was still one more challenge to go before I can have a good rest. With 1 hand-carry mini luggage, and 1 backpack, I've to across a wide river by CANOPY BRIDGE! And it was really long!!! I thought I'll be fine at first, but when I stood on it, I noticed it wasn't that safe as I thought!

See the bridge behind me? The school is on the end of this bridge.

The view of village from another side.
Enough at the moment, gonna go for nap first. Hehe... Check it out for PART III!

Teaching in Another World: SK Salong (Part I)

The TESLians went to another primary school again. It's 3 hours from my beloved institute. My institute can already consider as rural area. But this place is even further and further and almost come to the border of Malaysia-Indonesia.

Welcome to SK Salong, Pensiangan, Sabah!
Date: 1st - 2nd July 2010
Event: English Reading Program by TESL Students of IPG Keningau Campus

Why I said another world? Because there's totally no phone coverage over there. But I heard the school is equipped with WiFi. I didn't bring my laptop, can't try it. Neither my phone charger.  Because there'll be no electricity at night.

1st July 9am, we off to our destination by bus
(around 2 hours)
In the bus

Stop awhile at Nabawan town, a small town, for excretion, lol
View of Nabawan town

After 2 hours, about 11am, we arrived at the transportation-switching point. The teachers from the school drove out to pick us. 5 four-wheels HILUX waiting for us there, the bus can't fetch us through the journey after that. There were still 45 minutes to travel. But I was in the middle of the forest already. Surrounded by big trees and river. Wondering what place I'm going. (O.o)

Bus and HILUX that I used

Hehe... Check it out on my next post to see what kind of road I was travelling before reaching the school. ^_^
